Southfork Ranch Q&A:
What was Southfork Ranch before it was known for the television show “Dallas”?
The property was a farm owned by builder and quarter horse enthusiast, Joe “J.R.” Duncan. People always ask, but it is mere coincidence that Larry Hagman’s iconic character had the same initials. After Mr. Duncan sold the house, the land was purchased by Terry Trippet in 1984. He built the conference center and turned the house into a bed and breakfast. Terry lost the property in 1990 and it sat empty for two years, until Rex Maughan, the current owner, purchased it in 1992 and turned it into the tourist attraction you see today.
How much was actually filmed at the Ranch?
During the filming of the original “Dallas” show, only the exterior of the mansion and ranch were used; the interior shots were filmed in California. For the second series, both the interior and exterior were filmed at the mansion and throughout the ranch.
How many years was “Dallas” filmed there?
Thirteen years for the original series and three years for the second series.
