Award-winning fabric artist and leather pyrography portrait artist Jas Mardis returns to the ArtCentre of Plano in a dual exhibition honoring Black History Month to be held at the ArtCentre of Plano and the Plano African American Museum.
The ArtCentre will exhibit “First Squares and Old Crowns,” a body of fabric art and prints that show a range of the artist’s practice and include quilt piecework from his youth combined with his modern leather pyrography portrait and images from his “Just a Crown” series.
The Plano African American Museum will feature a collection of eight (8) quilts that Mardis has gathered for the “I Witness: Protest and Race Quilts.” These fabric art quilts expound on the journey of African American experiences and racial strife through the artist’s eyes.
