Plano Symphony: 2019/2020 Concert 2 – Rhapsody in Blue

October 19, 2019 @ 8:00 pm

$79 – $412

Pianist Kenneth Broberg won the silver medal at 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition with performances marked by “an imaginative shaping of themes, revelation of inner voices, and an unfailing sense of momentum” (Texas Classical Review). Broberg is also a prize winner of the Hastings, Sydney, Seattle, and New Orleans International Piano Competitions.  He made his subscription concert debut with the Minnesota Orchestra stepping in for Andre Watts days before the performance, which was declared ” a highly auspicious debut, marked by poise [and] technical brilliance.” (Star Tribune).

Broberg joins Hector Guzman and the Plano Symphony in two concertos both influenced by jazz.  Ravel wrote his Piano Concerto in G Major over the course of two years and hoped to premiere the work, which illness prevented.  Gershwin’s beloved Rhapsody in Blue has become one of the most popular concertos in the repertory.

The performance concludes with Gershwin’s beloved American in Paris.  Gershwin first visited Paris to study with Ravel.  Following initial meetings, Ravel stated, “Why be a second-rated Ravel, when you can be a first rate Gershwin.”

Loman: Huateque for Orchestra (USA Premiere)
Ravel: Piano Concerto in G
Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue for Piano and Orchestra
Gershwin: An American in Paris
