Visit Plano Team Member Spotlight: Shane Sorenson

Name: Shane Sorenson

Title: Convention Services Coordinator

How long have you been with Visit Plano? Just over 2 years

How many years have you been in the travel & tourism industry? 5 Years

What is your favorite part about working for Visit Plano? The variety of events coming to Plano always keeps me on my toes. I can go from working with a group of insurance professionals coordinating team building exercises, to managing hotel reservations for a lacrosse tournament and assisting with on-site registration for a religious meeting – sometimes all in the same day.

What is your favorite thing to do in Plano? My favorite thing to do in Plano is eat. Not even kidding here! The food scene is ridiculous. Plano has everything from street tacos to restaurants owned by celebrity chefs. When I can’t decide what I want for dinner, I usually start driving through Plano and stop at a random restaurant. People in the office jokingly say that “I’m eating my way through Plano one restaurant at a time,” and well, that may be true.

What has been your favorite vacation? That’s a difficult question, not because I’ve had so many vacations, but because I’ve had so few.  Most of my free weekends are spent renovating my house or helping someone else with their renovation. If I had to answer, I’d say a cruise that I went on in 2012. It was a 6-day Eastern Caribbean cruise with stops in Grand Cayman Island and Cozumel. My generation takes a lot of flak for always being on our cell phones and tablets, but it was so nice to not have to check social media, email, phone messages or anything for 6 days so that I could literally unplug and be in the moment enjoying my vacation. My favorite activity on the cruise: zip-Lining above the treetops in Cozumel. I can’t wait to try the new Go Ape Treetop Adventure Course at Plano’s Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve!

What can you not live without? Dr Pepper. It is my lifeblood. I’ve given up sodas probably 10 times in my life, but I always come back to my first love. (P.S. I was not paid to say that by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group headquartered here in Plano, but if anyone from Dr Pepper reads this, I wouldn’t mind a care package sent to the office.)

What is an interesting fact about yourself? As extroverted as I seem, I really enjoy spending time alone, which a lot of people who know me find surprising. It doesn’t happen that often, but having some “me time” every now and then really helps me keep things in balance. I also enjoy doing spoken word style poetry at open mic nights, playing the piano, and I love designing and building custom furniture pieces that I don’t have room for in my own house.
